Where carpet still makes sense

Carpet has lost ground in Kenya to tiles, SPC and epoxy, and mostly for good reasons, dust, allergies and the ease of cleaning a hard floor. But it still wins in two places.

Bedrooms, where warmth and quiet underfoot matter more than washability.

Offices, where carpet tiles absorb the noise of an open-plan floor and, crucially, can be lifted individually when someone spills coffee or a cable has to be rerouted. That single property makes carpet tile the default for Nairobi office fit-outs.

Carpet tile versus broadloom

Tiles: replaceable individually, easy to work around floor boxes and cable routes, and they handle an irregular room without a complicated cutting plan. Slightly visible joints.

Broadloom: seamless across a room and warmer looking, but a damaged area means relaying a whole section, and seams in a large room need care to place.

For offices we would almost always specify tiles. For a bedroom, broadloom.

Underlay and gripper

On broadloom, underlay is not the place to save money. It carries most of the comfort and most of the life of the carpet, a good carpet on poor underlay wears out faster than a modest carpet on good underlay.

Gripper rods around the perimeter, correctly spaced from the wall, are what keep a stretched carpet flat. Carpet laid loose or stuck at the edges will ripple within a year.

Stairs

Stairs are the hardest carpet work and the most commonly done badly. Each tread and riser needs its own tensioning, and a poorly fitted stair carpet is both ugly and a genuine trip hazard.

We charge more for stairs and we would rather tell you that up front than fit them badly at a flat rate.

Subfloor

Carpet hides an uneven subfloor better than any other finish, which is exactly why people skip preparation. It does not hide grit, anything left on the slab will work its way through the backing and wear the carpet from below.
