Parquet is a Nairobi floor

Solid timber blocks laid in a pattern, and one of the few traditional finishes that still makes sense here. The older houses in Muthaiga, Lavington and Kileleshwa are full of it, much of it seventy years old and still serviceable, which is a better durability argument than anything a manufacturer will give you.

The subfloor decides everything

Parquet is timber bonded to a slab, and timber moves with moisture. A slab that reads damp will push that moisture into the blocks, and they will cup, lift at the edges and eventually debond.

We test the slab rather than looking at it. A moisture reading takes minutes and a failed parquet floor takes the whole room. On ground-floor rooms in the wetter parts of Nairobi, and anywhere the slab was poured recently, that test is not a formality.

Where the reading is high the answer is a moisture barrier or waiting, and we will say which.

Patterns

Herringbone, the classic, blocks at ninety degrees in a zig-zag. Most work, most waste, best looking.

Double herringbone and basketweave, more formal, and they suit larger rooms because the repeat is bigger.

Brick bond, simplest and quickest, and it reads as a plank floor rather than as parquet.

Pattern affects labour and waste far more than material cost. Herringbone in a room with several angles can add a third to the fitting time, and that is where quotes for the “same” floor diverge.

Timber

Mahogany, cypress and teak are what is realistically available in Kenya. Teak is the most stable and the most expensive; cypress is the most affordable and moves the most. Ask what you are being quoted, because “hardwood parquet” covers all three and a price that looks competitive is usually telling you which one it is.

Sanding and finish

New parquet is laid, left to acclimatise, then sanded flat and finished. That sequence is not optional: blocks are never perfectly level after laying and the flatness comes from the sanding.

A floor that is laid and finished the same week has not been sanded properly, and you will feel it underfoot for as long as you own it.
